The locking system for securing a bayonet (7) to the barrel (2) of a rifle includes a fitting (10) at the blade (8) end and a locking lug (13) at the handle (11) end. The fitting has a ring which fits over a set of rings around the muzzle (21). The locking lug fits into an attachment (5) which carries the front sight (4). The locking lug has a serrated block which projects outwards at an angle from the tapered ring-shaped part (12) at the end of the handle. This block is pushed inwards against a spring behind it, to enable a lug at the rear to lock behind a pin across the barrel attachment to prevent the bayonet rotating.
