An ε-caprolactam(I)-H2SO4 reaction mixt. was completely or partially neutralized, and the aq. neutralized soln. that was recovered after solven extn. of the lactam ammonium salt was thermally decompd. The NH3- and SO2- contg. gas mixt. obtained was contacted with water to give an aq. soln. contg. (NH4)2SO3 and/or NH4HSO3 which was used to neutralize the I-H2SO4 reaction mixt.
