Aq. MgCl2 or MgSO4 and aq. (NH4)2CO3 or Na2CO3 were mixed at 30-70≦̸C and pH 7-9.5 for 15-180 min residence time to ppt. (2-20)μ×(50-300)μ acicular MgCO3 as a 3-20% slurry, which was readily converted to basic magnesium carbonate for use as filler for rubber. Thus, 21%(wt./vol.) MgCl2 and 8.5% (NH4)2CO3 were fed at 22.4 and 61.4 ml/min, resp., at 1:1.1 mol ratio into a vessel at 47≦̸C and pH 8.5; the 8% slurry was removed after 90 min residence time. MgCO3 of (3-9)μx(75-200)μ crystals was obtained in 85% yield.
