Carbostyrils(I; R = H, C<6 alkyl, R1 = H, C<6 alkyl, Ph, R2 = H, halogen, C<6 alkyl, C<6 alkoxy, C<6 alkylcarbonyl, C<6 alkoxycarbonyl, C<6 acyloxy, hydroxy, nitro, amino, cyano 1 or C<6 thioalkoxy) useful as an antioxidizing agent, bactericide, plant growth regulating agent and photographic developer were manufd. by reaction of acylacetanilide(II) with inactive org. solvent at 70-160≦̸C for 30 min-5 hr in the presence of Arrhenius acid or Lewis acid.
