Long strips of paper (such as computer print-out) are torn along transverse lines of perforations to form separate sheets. The paper (4) is initially folded in zig-zag fashion and placed at the base of the vertical machine (1). One end of the strip is passed through a slot (7) and over a roller (10) with spikes which engage holes in the paper edges. The paper passes between a pair of slitting rollers (11,12) and then between two further pairs of rollers (13,16). The lower pair of rollers (16) run faster than the upper pair so that the cut sheet is separated and fed into a curved guide (19,20) which delivers it to the stack (2).
