A tumble dryer for laundry has an air-cooled condenser to extract moisture from the drying air, which collects in a drip container beneath the condenser. The container is periodically emptied by an automatic pump which lifts the condensate to a high level storage tank in an easily-accessible chamber behind the control panel. The chamber has a drain outlet to take any overflow from the tank back into the drip container, which stops further condensate collection and activates an alarm signal if it becomes overfilled. This is a simple, reliable and relatively inexpensive arrangement for monitoring the condensate level.
