The sandwich plate, designed as a hinged flap for vehicle coachwork, has a double skin (13,15) enclosing a honeycomb layer (17). Selected peripheral portions are reinforced by a thicker strengthening section (9) with a foam material core (23). At the junction region with the thicker section, the lower sheet (15) of the double skin is recessed, and the core is joined to the honeycomb material by using a suitable connection between them, such as forming the foam onto the honeycomb material. At the inner side, the supporting sheet (19) for the thicker section is joined by adhesive to the lower sheet of the double skin. At the outer side, the supporting sheet is flanged and bolted, with a flange similarly secured to the lower sheet, at the edge.
