The connection is intended for a hip joint prosthesis and has a ball head and a blade, or spike, fitting in a recess in the femur. The blade, or spike (6), has near the ball end a fin-type boss (12) which, on insertion, fits in a correspondingly shaped and prepared recess in the trochanter. There can be apertures (13) in the fin, through which bone tissue can grow after insertion. It can also be split into two parallel parts, fitting on either side of a bone rib, left when forming the recess. The fin can be part of a sleeve fitted over the blade etc. and secured to it.
