The compressed air installation comprises an air compressor (1) connected to a storage vessel. A pressure-operated valve (4) has a throttle bypass (5) in the inlet line (2',2) to control the compressor output as a function of the air demand. A pressure-operated valve (8) controls the pilot pressure to the valve (4), a safety and idling vent valve (9) also being provided. The valve is of two-position type, pilot-operated to close by pressure at the storage vessel admitted via the valve (8). This is itself pilot-operated to open by the storage vessel pressure when that pressure exceeds a given level.
