The refiner has spaced rotor discs concentric with a rotatable hub within a housing, and additional discs interleaved with the rotor discs and defining passages for suspension with them. Relative rotation is created between the rotor and additional discs, and flexible rotors are mounted on the hub to be rotatable with it. Resilient couplings connect the rotors with the rotor discs and include resilient elastomer deformable in shear mode to permit increased axial deflection of the rotors. The elastomer is pref. a silicone rubber and the rotors have radial spokes extending into slots in the rotor discs, the elastomer filling the spaces between spokes and slots.
