A method of and an apparatus for the dry quenching of coke comprises a band conveyor upon which the coke is transported continuously in a relatively thin layer and enclosed at least in part by a vault of quartz or other heat-transfer material which is sprayed upon its face turned away from the coke with water to produces steam which is continuously removed and used directly or indirectly as a source of heat.
