The invention comprises an ethylenically unsaturated 2,4 - dihydroxy - benzophenone derivative corresponding to the general formula <FORM:0990312/C2/1> or <FORM:0990312/C2/2> wherein X represents an ethylenically unsaturated group which is a beta-hydroxypropyl acrylate, beta - hydroxypropyl methacrylate, (3 - allyloxy - 2 - hydroxy) propyl, or (2-hydroxy)buten - 3 - yl - 1 - radical, and R represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy radical. The novel compounds may be made by the catalyzed reaction of a 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone with glycidyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, butadiene monoxide or allyl glycidyl ether. Suitable dihydroxybenzophenones are 2,4 - dihydroxybenzophenone, 2,21,4 - tri -hydroxybenzophenone and 2,21,4,41 - tetrahydroxybenzophenone. The catalyst may be an alkali metal hydroxide, salt of an alkali metal, or a quaternary ammonium halide, which may be present in a concentration of 0.1 to 5.0%, based on the weight of the unsaturated reagent. Reaction temperatures are in the range 50 DEG to 100 DEG C. Detailed examples are given.ALSO:The invention comprises homopolymers, and copolymers with ethylenically unsaturated comonomers, of ethylenically unsaturated 2,4-dihydroxy-benzophenon derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0990312/C3/1> or <FORM:0990312/C3/2> wherein X represents a beta-hydroxypropyl acrylate, beta-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, (3 - allyloxy - 2 - hydroxy) propyl, or (2-hydroxy) buten - 3 - yl - 1 radical, and R represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy radical. The polymers are made by heating the 2,4-dihydroxy-benzophenone derivatives, alone or together with at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer, in the presence of a free radical initiator. Suitable comonomers are styrene; methyl styrene; the acrylic and methacrylic esters of aliphatic alcohols; acrylic acid; methacrylic acid; butadiene; acrylamide; acrylonitrile; methacrylonitrile; vinyl propionate; dibutyl maleate; dibutyl fumarate; vinylidene chloride; vinyl chloride; vinyl acetate; ethylene and propylene. The copolymers should contain at least 0.1% by weight of the 2,4-dihydroxy-benzophenone derivatives. The polymers are made by known free radical initiated processes utilizing bulk, suspension, solution or emulsion polymerization techniques, or by ionic catalysis or stereospecific Ziegler catalysts. When a diethylenic dihydroxy-benzophenone derivative is used, the resulting copolymers may be cross-linked.ALSO:Paper or a film of a vinylidene chloride: ethyl acrylate copolymer is coated with a homopolymer of an unsaturated 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone of the general formula <FORM:0990312/B1-B2/1> or <FORM:0990312/B1-B2/2> wherein X represents a beta-hydroxypropyl acrylate, beta-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, (3-allyloxy-2-hydroxy)propyl or (2-hydroxy)buten-3-yl-1 radical and R represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy radical, or a copolymer of such a benzophenone derivative with at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The coating is effected by casting. |
