To ensure correct meshing between a driven gear-wheel or annulus 2b and a driving pinion 1b the latter is mounted in a floating ease 3b which is universally pivoted to fixed supports 15b, 14b and 7b by generally horizontal rods 9b, 8b in the plane of the gears and a vertical anchor rod 4b. The line joining the pivot 10b of rod 8b and the pivot 11b of rod 9b lies on the same side as the driven gear axis O 2 relative to the gear tooth contact point O 3 , and is substantially perpendicular to the line x-x joining the driving and driven gear axes. The rod 8b is formed by a piston 21 pivoted to the anchor rod 4b at 10b and spring-biased to the end of a cylinder 22, which is pivoted at 12b to the fixed support 14b, to urge the pinion 16 into mesh with the gear 2b. Fluid admitted to the cylinder 22 disengages the driving pinion 1b from the gear 2b. The pinion 1b is driven through a universal joint 19 and the weight of the case 3 counteracted by a spring 25. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the horizontal pinion case rods are oppositely directed and the horizontal rod (8b) is pivoted directly to the pinion case (3) and may be controllable in length for disengaging the pinion from the driven gear. |
