Make-up air is admitted to the closed circuit through a conduit 9 via an inlet 7, throttle 9a, pump 8 and decarbonation unit 10. A proportion of the exhaust is removed through a conduit 11 having a condenser 12 for recovering water. The cell 1 supplies current to a load 2 which may vary. For efficient cell operation it is required that the fluid-flow rate through conduits 9, 11 varies in accordance with the load current. This control is achieved by a motor M which regulates the throttles 9a, 3a in response to a signal from a comparator 21, the comparator receiving an input voltage signal over lines 13, 14, the magnitude of this voltage signal being substantially proportional to the load current. The specification shows that such a control causes the oxygen concentration in the conduit 11 to remain constant and it also causes the ratio of the fluid-flow rates through conduits 9, 11 to remain constant. In a modification the conduit 11 is on the downstream side of the conduit 9. The electrical control system is described in greater detail with reference to Fig.2 (not shown). |
