The fishing float having a light activated by the hooking of a fish comprises a lower float (1) secured to a hollow rod (2) through which the fishing line is secured. A translucent cylindrical hollow body (3) is slidably on the rod, a plastics membrane (4) sealing the upper portion of the body to the rod, and a lead weight (11) attached to the lower portion. The rod passing through the body carries a secure plastics disc (9) overlying a flexible spring contact (14) one end of which overlies a battery terminal in a metal holder (16) which together with a lamp (15) forms an electrical circuit. Under normal circumstances the body rides above the water. When a fish bites the float is drawn under water. The buoyancy of the body raises it on the rod and the disc (9) deflects the contact against the battery terminal completing the circuit and lighting the lamp.
