The hydraulic mechanism is intended for breaking the seal between two flanges (6) so that the flange packing (9) can be removed and replaced. It comprises a hydraulic power cylinder (1) which carries two jaws (2) holding (7) slidable connectors (5) hooked on to a bar (8) inserted in one set of flange bores after removal of a flange bolt. The ram of the cylinder carries an interchangeable (4) wedge (3) which is driven between the flanges to part them when the cylinder is pressurised.
