Transfer apparatus for the selective transfer of articles from a first conveyor (2) to a second conveyor (6) and comprising transfer means (7), is characterised in that the second conveyor (6) comprises two drive belts (12, 13) which are wound around pulleys having a substantially horizontal axis and which have substantially parallel lower reaches that are retained in guides. The guides can be moved towards or away from one another in order to grip articles (3) brought into an upper position or to release articles (3) after having discharged them laterally of the first conveyor (2). The transfer means (7) preferably comprises grippers which are movable vertically.
