1341322 Capacitors UNION CARBIDE CORP 19 April 1971 [11 March 1970] 23703/71 Heading H1M In a capacitor comprising stacked and sintered alternate ceramic and electrode layers with alternate electrode layers offset to extend to opposite end faces of the capacitor body, end contact layers each extend over a portion of one side face of the body so that it may be mounted directly on a printed circuit board (Fig. 5, not shown) and comprise a fired on layer 59 of silver particles in a glass frit and a layer 58 of copper coating the silver layer. The copper layer, preferably 0À1 to 0À5 mils. thick, forms a barrier to scavenging of silver from the contact layer when this is being soldered to a land 56 on the board. The silver layers are preferably applied by dip coating so that each extends on to a margin of all four side faces (Fig. 3, not shown). The copper layers are applied by electroplating, preferably using barrel plating equipment. The copper layers may have a solder coat 60 for bonding to land 56 by reflow soldering, or a layer of solder may be placed between the contact surfaces. |
