In the aqueous suspension polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the monomer is mixed with a dispersion stabilizer in the form of a finely divided inorganic salt, and the resulting mixture is suspended in water, the finely divided material being insoluble in the monomer and water. The monomer may be vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, styrene a (meth) acrylate, butadiene or acrylonitrile, and the finely divided material may be calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate or magnesium carbonate. This stabilizer is preferably mixed with a minimum quantity of monomer, in a highspeed mixer or ball mill. In the examples, (1) styrene is mixed with calcium carbonate and polymerized in suspension, and (2) methyl methacrylate is mixed with magnesium carbonate and copper stearate followed by suspension polymerization with styrene, the catalyst in both examples being benzoyl peroxide. |
