Exhaust manifold for IC engine - has curved sections welded together from semicircular sheet steel pieces

The manifold has one section which connects the two outer cylinders (1) and one section which connects the two inner cylinders (2). Each section is a curved pipe which is assembled from two semi-circular pieces (5,6) of sheet steel. The two pieces have outward turned flanges (13) in a plane and are welded together along these. Each circular section formed in this way terminates in a neck with a flange (16) which bolts to a flange (20) on the exhaust pipe. The construction reduces the weight of the manifold without involving expensive manufacturing methods and utilises material which is suitable for high temperatures.
