The mechanism clamps printing plates on the cylinder of a printing press in the correct alignment, using clamping rails in the cylinder groove and to which the plate ends are secured. The rails are movable in the peripheral direction of the cylinder by tensioning mechanisms, whose bearing and supporting surfaces are protected by guards from dirt so as to keep the coefficient of friction constant. The plate end rail is moved in the tightening direction by a single actuator via a scissors mechanism, and the tension forces are transmitted via an adjustable-torque ratchet screwdriver. The actuator is an adjusting spindle (33) parallel to the plate end rail (27) and with screw threads (35,36) of opposite pitch, on which nuts (37,38) slide. The nuts are fixed to wedges (42,42) sliding on the rear edge (27a) of the rail, and on which the scissor lever ends.
