The chain tensioner has a mounting block (6) which is provided with a tension head (10). A spring loaded piston (8) locates the tension head (10) in the mounting block (4), thus providing the required tension force that is applied on the chain. A locking bracket (12), made of plastics material, is used to retain the tension head (10) retracted from the active position. The bracket has two parallel arms (16,14) to form a C-shaped profile. When the longer arm (14) is inserted into a location hole (4), the other arm (16) hooks over the tension head.
