PURPOSE:To perform economically case-hardening heat treatment without strain and heat cracking by irradiating a laser of high energy density on each surface of a tooth of a worm gear moved axially while being rotated. CONSTITUTION:A worm gear 1 is mounted on a moving device 14 and made to shift in the axial direcrion while being rotated around the axis therof. At the same time a laser oscillator 11 generates a laser 12a of high energy density and the laser 12b condensed through a condensing lens 21 is irradiated on the top of a tooth of the worm gear 1. And, a part of the laser is reflected with reflecting mirrors 22, 23, 24 and 25, and converged through converging lenses 26 and 27 to irradiate each side of the tooth. On this case, a controller 15 feeds signals which specify a laser power and duration time thereof to control the laser oscillator 11 and also feeds signals which specify the speeds of rotation and traverse of the worm gear 1 for case-hardening to a desired depth to the motor device in a traverse unit 14. The radiation of a high energy laser enables to produce easily the hardened layer of a desired depth. |
