Injection of carbonaceous fuel or oxygen into molten iron - using spring loaded valve; esp. for steel-making converters

Below the surface of molten iron in a vessel, e.g. a converter, are tuyeres embedded in the refractory brickwork in the vessel. Either fuel suspended in a carrier gas, or oxygen, is fed to the same inlet channel leading to the tuyere, and esp. into an inner tuyere tube, which is concentrically surrounded by an outer tube fed with gas- or liq- hydrocarbons. The alternate feeding of the fuel in its carrier gas, or oxygen, is achieved using a valve with two seats. In one position of the valve, only oxygen flows to the tuyere inlet pipe; in the other position of the valve only the fuel in its carrier gas flows into the tuyere inlet pipe.. The method is esp. suited to the converter steel making described in DE 2838983, where coal or coke can be blown into the converter. Tuyere blockage by the solid fuel is avoided.
