1290573 Winches C J LAWRENCE 19 April 1971 [9 Feb 1970] 6170/70 Heading B8B A marine winch comprises a drum 6 rotatable about a turret 2 extending upwardly from a casing 3 securable to a ship's deck on the like and a central manually driven spindle 21 which through gear rings 25, 27, 31, 32, 33 drives the drum 6 at two different speeds depending on which direction the spindle 21 is rotated. In one direction of rotation the gear-wheel 31 integral with the spindle 21 drives the internal gear ring 27 through a pair of gears 33a, each of which rotates a coaxial gear 33b through a uni-directional sprag clutch, and the gears 33b drive diametrically opposite gears 25 which mesh with the ring 27. In the opposite direction of rotation, a gear 32 coaxial with the gear 31 is driven by the spindle 21 through a unidirectional sprag clutch which free wheeled during the first said direction of rotation, this gear 32 directly driving the gears 25 whilst the gears 33a free wheel through their unidirectional clutch coupling to the gears 33b. The ring gear 27 is formed on a rotatable sub casing 11 having a sleeve 11a extending coaxially through the turret 2 and the drum 6 is driven from the sleeve 11a through a unidirectional sprag clutch 20, a further unidirectional sprag clutch 10 being provided between the drum 6 and the turret 2 and operable in the direction opposite to that of the clutch 20. The interior of the winch is formed as a sealed chamber for retaining a lubricant therein. |
