Upstream of the nozzle the casing is provided with annular sound-absorbent baffles and a sound-absorbent screen 6. Ambient air enters the casing between the screen and baffles. Nozzle 4 comprises an outer body 7 formed with orifices c which communicate by passages 10 with orifices d in an inner body 9. Gas passes through annular slot f which terminates at a shoulder e formed on inner body 9. The gas expands as it leaves the slot and mixes with ambient air around the nozzle. At the outlet end of the nozzle, further air which has passed through the interior of the nozzle is mixed with the gas and air mixture.
