PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for vinyl acetate, polyester resin, etc., readily and in high selectivity, by the reaction of acetic anhydride with hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium and an iodine compounds, without using acetaldehyde. CONSTITUTION:Acetic anhydride is reacted with hydrogen, in the presence of a rhodium compound, e.g. rhodium nitrate, rhodium chloride, or chlorocarbonylbis (triphenyphosphine)rhodium, in an amount of around 100-30,000ppm as rhodium metal based on the whole reaction medium, and an iodine compound, e.g. methyl or acetyl iodide, in a molar amount of 50-200 times, preferably in the range of 100-200 times, that of rhodium, to obtain ethylidene diacetate. |
