A process and equipment for marking metal objects, in particular high-temperature metal billets, is described. The marking will enable selective identification to be made of the object in question. For the marking, a marking head 3 is used with at least one electrode 4 in order to produce, by means of electric arc treatment, a mark on the object 1 in matrix form. The mark will consist of matrix parts in the form of raised bits which are welded on, whereby a melting electrode is utilised and preferably the principles of gas metal arc welding. Alternatively it could consist of matrix parts in the form of hollows whereby a non-melting electrode is used and preferably the principles of plasma arc cutting. The marking head 3 would preferably include a series of electrodes 4 which are activated selectively in conjunction with relative movement between the marking head 3 and the metal object 1 to produce the desired matrix parts of the mark. By detecting whether the required electrode current is being used in conjunction with activation of an electrode, it is possible to get confirmation that the desired mark matrix part is actually being produced. <IMAGE> |
