PURPOSE:To rapidly obtain an image having high contrast, sharpness and maximum density without using a phosphorus compound by adding sodium silicate and/ or potassium silicate to a developer for a silver complex salt diffusion transfer method (DTR method). CONSTITUTION:To a developer for a DTR method used in the reproduction of documents, the manufacture of a lithographic plate, instant photography, etc. are added one or more kinds of Na and K salts of silicic acid such as sodium orthosilicate, sodium metasilicate, potassium metasilicate and potassium hydrogendisilicate. Unlike conventional trisodium phosphate the silicates do not inhibit gelation in an image receiving layer from swelling, and they are cheaper than the phosphate.
