PURPOSE:To make it possible to measure rapidly an iodine value in the Wijs method without using a harmful mercury compound, by using magnesium acetate or sodium acetate as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:To an iodine-value-measuring sample, about 5ml of 3% glacial acetic acid solution of magnesium acetate or 5% glacial acetic acid solution of sodium acetate is added and made to react for about 3min, thereby measuring the iodine value. This method results less variance than the conventional rapid method that uses mercuric acetate, and provides the measurement of excellent precision and reproducibility with a reaction time one tenth that of the ordianry Wijs method. |
