NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I (R is 1-10C alkyl or alkoxy). EXAMPLE:p-Cyanobenzoic acid-trans-4-heptylcyclohexyl ester. USE:One ingredient of liquid crystal composition having positive dielectric anisotropy. PROCESS:A cyclohexanol obtained by reducing an alkylphenol is epimerized in a diethylene glycol solvent, by using NaOH as a catalyst, to give a compound shown by the formula II. A p-cyanobenzoic acid shown by the formula III is reacted with thionyl chloride to give an acid chloride shown by the formula IV. This compound is reacted with the corresponding trans-4-substituted hexanol shown by the formula II in the presence of pyridine to give a compound shown by the formula I. The compound shown by the formula I has a viscosity, eta25 at 25 deg.C of 30CP and is low viscous. It mixes well with other liquid crystal compound and can be used for wide purposes.
