PURPOSE:To obtain a cinnamate in high yield useful as a raw material for pesticides or photosensitive resins, by reacting a styrene with carbon monoxide, an alcohol, and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst, under specific carbon monoxide partial pressure. CONSTITUTION:A styrene is reacted with carbon monoxide, an alcohol, and oxygen by using a mixture of a platinum group metal or its compound (e.g., palladium chloride) and a copper salt (e.g., cupric chloride) or an iron salt as a main catalyst, to give a cinnamate (e.g., ethyl cinnamate). At the beginning or in the middle of the reaction, the reaction is carried out under the condition that coabon monoxide partial pressure in the system is not lower than 18kg/cm<2>.G and a ratio of partial pressure of carbon monoxide to that of oxygen is not larger than 4 when oxygen and/or carbon monoxide is fed. Even if partial pressure of carbon monoxide is raised, the yield is improved when the ratio of partial pressure of carbon monoxide to that of oxygen is reduced. |
