In the laid-out state the anti-skid device has the form of a ladder and comprises a multiplicity of transverse ribs (13, 14, 15) which are arranged transversely to two parallel tension cables (10a, 10b), one end (22, 24) of each second transverse rib (14) being releasable from the associated cable. The releasable end (22, 24) of each second transverse rib (14) is fastened to the associated tension cable (10b) after the device has been placed around the tyre, this resulting in the device resting snugly against the tyre. The last transverse rib (15) at one end (11 or 12) of the cables (10a, 10b) can be releasable from one of the cables (10b) or one of the cables can have, in its centre, a separable member and, as a result, the device can be placed around the tyre without having to raise the vehicle or drive the vehicle over the laid-out device. <IMAGE>
