The preparation of an antibiotic of the formula II is described <IMAGE> The process comprises subjecting a compound of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R is lower alkoxy, phenoxy, lower alkyl or optionally substituted phenyl to a mild basic treatment in the presence of an aqueous solvent. The products of the process have growth-promoting properties in agricultural livestock.
