Phototypesetting device with inserted character frame - reads machine code designating character type to bring required composition store into exposure position

The device uses a character frame which has a machine readable code at a given point designating the character type of the alphabet of print characters contained in the frame. Pref. a rotatable type carrier is used with adjacent frame fields each containing an alphabet of print characters. The different frame fields contain print characters of various types, each with a machine readable code designating the latter. Pref. the type carrier has an automatic positioning control for bringing a composition store of a required type into the exposure position in accordance with the type codes read from the frame fields.
