The two-stroke combustion engine has one-way scavenging of the cylinders (1) to an exhaust valve (5) and two axially spaced rows (A,B) of inlet ports in the cylinder wall (2) which are opened in succession as the piston (6) passes to admit air from a common scavenging air line (8). The first row (A) of ports, which is nearer the combustion chamber (3), are directed in a plane at right angles to the cylinder axis (10) but deviate from the radial direction. The second row (B) consists of ports pointing radially inward but upwardly inclined towards the chamber (3).
