The grinding or polishing machine incorporates a tool driven by a motor. The tool (46) comprises a hollow roller, the motor (40, 42) being mounted coaxially inside it. The inner wall of the tool can be tapered, fitting on the correspondingly tapered overhung rotor of the motor. The tool in turn can be enclosed by a drum-shaped portion (12) of the housing with a removable end cover. At the intake side of the tool this housing portion can be widened to form an exhaust chamber (30) with a union (32) for an exhaust hose.
