A magnetic tape recorder has a built-in signal compander to increase the effective signal band width of the unit. The compression stage receives the effective signal (1) that is processed by two identical amplifier stages (3,6) with variable transmission characteristics provided by input stages (4,7) and filter stages (5,8). The stages allow the suppression of high frequency distorting signals. The output of the second stage is processed by a high pass filter (10) and a control voltage generator (11) provides a signal to control the amplifiers. A low pass filter (9) generates the output signal. An expansion stage of a similar construction completes the unit.
