The orienteering aid consists of an instrument to determine the distance, direction, size and external surface structure of ground objects (10). It evaluates, converts and transmits the data worked out. It consists of a generator (SG) which transmits a series of oscillations. The signals produced by or reflected from the objects are picked up by a receiver (EV). The signals are evaluated in a computer with an output unit to give the user access to the information. Transmission can be ultrasonic, electromagnetic, or infrared radiation.
