VELOPMENT CORP 13 April 1971 9207/71 Heading C5E A gas mixture containing CO and H 2 O, e.g. from a partial combustion process, is subjected to a multi-stage catalytic shift conversion process at elevated pressure, a portion of the effluent from the first stage being recycled. Pressures in each stage range from 1 to 250 atmos. and the effluent entering the second stage is at a temperature below the inlet temperature of the gas entering the first stage. Temperatures in the stages range from 350‹ to 1050‹ F. and 350‹ to 800‹ F., respectively. Interstage cooling of the unrecycled gas may be performed by injecting condensate into the gas, or by indirect contact, e.g. in a waste heat boiler or, before or after taking off the recycle portion, by the incoming gas mixture. The catalysts, which may vary in composition in each stage, may be iron oxide promoted with Cr, Th, U, Be, or Sb, or mixtures of Cu salts or oxides and Zn salts or oxides.</p> |
