A tape measure has at its free ends a rectangular finger ring which can swivel in a wedge-shaped fitting. The legs of this fitting, which fit around the tape end, are tapered down so that they can bend together with the tape. This creates a joint for a tape measure which can absorb considerable tensile forces. Even poor handling and kinking does not damage the initial length of the tape.
