The polishing device uses a rotating grinding disc (8) supported by a holder movable in a direction parallel to the cutting direction. The grinding disc (8) is acted on by an adjustable guide tool (18) with an automatic setting drive (19) for the latter, which is coupled to a control device (32) receiving the output of a sensor monitoring the cutting dia of the rotating blades (2). This sensor is associated with one of the fixed counter blades (6) at the opposite side of the rotating cutter disc (1). Pref. the sensor uses two or more electrical contacts (29) insulated from one another along the cutting edge (31) of the counter blade (6) and coupled during passage of the cutter blade (2).
