The optical pumping system is for lasers and masers and gives an improved match between the emission spectrum of the pump light source and the absorption spectrum of the laser material. It achieves a high light intensity with a low thermal loading of the active laser material. The pump light originates from one or more fluorescent bodies (2). The narrow ends of the fluorescent body are fitted with metallic, dielectric or diffusive reflectors. They prevent the fluorescent light from being coupled to the laser material. Clear intermediate bodies (10) are provided between the ends of each fluorescent body and that of the optical conductor.
