The check-out counter is provided where bags are automatically supplied and opened. The bags are stored in strip form with handles of one bag being connected to the base of the next bag. A bag feed arrangement (4,5,6,8) advances and lowers the leading bag into a bag opening and filling compartment in the counter. A clamp (9) cooperates with a conveyor (8) and forms part of the bag feed arrangement, to separate the leading bag from the remainder of the bag strip. Movable and fixed vacuum jaws (10,11) engage and open the bag in the compartment.
