PURPOSE:To prepare an aromatic dialcohol useful as a raw material of a crosslinking agent, in high yield, by oxidizing diisopropylbenzene to obtain the oxidation mixture containing the hydroperoxide in high concentration, dissolving the mixture in a solvent insoluble in water, mixing with an alcohol and reducing the solution. CONSTITUTION:Diisopropylbenzene is oxidized with O2 in the presence of an aqueous alkali solution to attain the concentration of the hydroperoxide of >= 110wt%, calculated in terms of diisopropylbenzne monohydroperoxide. The oxidation mixture is dissolved in a solvent insoluble in water (e.g. aromatic hydrocarbons), mixed with a lower aliphatic alcohol (e.g. methanol) or a lower aliphatic ketone (e.g. acetone) and reduced with hydrogen. Di(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)benze neis obtained by removing the alcohol or the ketone from the reaction mixuture and crystallizing the product. EFFECT:The compound can be prepared by simple operations and a comparatively short process. |
