The target mat for tennis training is placed in a suitable position on the court. A ball striking the mat makes a contact which operates a score counter and gives an acoustic or optical indication. The mat consists of two rectangular sheets of flexible plastic, bonded together all round the edges. The inside surfaces have metal coatings connected at one edge to a cable with a plug for connection to the indicator. The metal coatings are separated by a sheet of compressible plastic sponge. The sponge sheet has numerous perforations which allow the metal coatings to make contact when a ball strikes the mat. The diameter of the perforations depends upon the thickness of the sponge sheet and the ball diameter.
