The thermoplastic is mixed with the glass beads in a single-screw or multi-screw extruder, and the mixture is extruded directly to form a film. Compared with processes in which films are extruded from prefabricated glass-bead-filled thermoplastics, the process provides the advantage that the thermoplastic is subject to thermal loading only once and is thereby damaged less. In the films produced by the single-stage process, the glass beads are surprisingly distributed so uniformly that these films can be used for optical purposes.
