An inking roller is provided which has both inking and noninking portions and which has substantially uniform deflection characteristics across its entire axial length. The roller includes a noninking sleeve which is placed over a reduced diameter portion of the roller at one end thereof, with the sleeve defining a part of the outer surface. This provides a roller which can be used for printing sheet material in a clear non-smearing manner.
