A method for removing sulfurous gases such as H2S and COS from a fuel gas is disclosed wherein limestone particulates containing iron sulfide provide catalytic absorption of the H2S and COS by the limestone. The method is effective at temperatures of 400 DEG C. to 700 DEG C. in particular.
