Electrostatic precipitator has a number of rappers each of which has a coil in series with a first rectifier and with a second rectifier connected in parallel with the coil, the two rectifiers being oppositely poled. Each rapper is connected at a cross point in a matrix formed between a number of power feed lines and a number of power return lines with switching devices which can be set to selectively energised any predetermined rapper from a power source supplying rectified AC current. Used as energising rapper used to remove participate matter from the electrodes of an electrostatic precipitator. This allows any rapper to be selectively energised while not requiring separate wires to each of the precipitator coils.
